"Into the Light", by the Slovenian photographer Sandi Bertoncelj, is the official image of the BBK Mendi Film Bilbao-Bizkaia mountain film festival. He has won this award in the CVCEPHOTO Contest of the Club Vasco de Camping Elkartea, so it will be the base of all Mendi Film's illustrations.
This is a photograph taken on Mount Kanin, in the Julian Alps, on the border between Slovenia and Italy. On the Slovenian slope, the skier climbs, straight and firm, as if directed to the sunlight that illuminates him from the top of the mountain. The photo is full of optimistic energy: "The possibility of being the one to open a trail in the mountains, in fresh snow, is unmatched. Don’t walk in the footprints walked before, find a new trail", says the author.
Sandi Bertoncelj is a professional adventure and nature photographer. He usually moves around on foot, ski or bike when looking for snapshots. His desire is to inspire viewers with the images he creates, and make them go out on the mountain so that everyone can find their own adventure. He lives in Kranj, Slovenia, in an idyllic setting for it.
The director of BBK Mendi Film Bilbao - Bizkaia, Jabier Baraiazarra, praises the photograph "Into the Light": "It is an image with enormous force, direct and full of energy of hope, in keeping with this era we are living in. I must also admit that personally I am very attracted to black and white photography, and in this case it helps to highlight the composition more: the light, the snow, the ski mountaineer, the shadows ... I hope our followers, the Mendizale, will like it”.
The BBK Mendi Film Bilbao-Bizkaia Poster Award has been chosen for the fourth consecutive year within the CVCEPHOTO international mountain activity photography contest. Sandi Bertoncelj receives a prize of € 700. Last year he already won an honourable mention in CVCEPHOTO with the photograph "Powder Earthquake".
The CVCEPHOTO contest, at its sixth edition, has unveiled the BBK Mendi Film Poster Award and its other prizes in a virtual event at the headquarters of the Club Vasco de Camping Elkartea, in San Sebastian. The awards ceremony planned for the 30th of May could not be carried out, taking into account the measures adopted in the face of the coronavirus crisis, and will be incorporated into the program of the 13th edition of the BBK Mendi Film Bilbao-Bizkaia festival, in December. Therefore, together with the traditional CVCEPHOTO exhibition, the awards ceremony and the conferences of its sixth edition will take place in Bilbao.
Sandi Bertoncelj about INTO THE LIGHT
|The weather conditions were fast changing that November morning on Kanin mountain in the Julian Alps in Slovenia. When we arrived on skis under the saddle we were confronted with a spectacular light. The sunbeams were shining through the thin clouds creating dramatic ambient with long shadows. I looked for an open composition looking towards the sun and asked a friend to create a new path through fresh snow, to make the photo more interesting. Such impressions stay with you - not only in the camera.
