At the beginning of the 21st century, the Galician mountain horse was declared to be endangered. Today, the tradition of A Rapa das Bestas helps mares and wild horses to continue grazing in the forests of Galicia. In Peru, the Quechua people celebrate the annual Chaccu de la vicuña, a similar festival, which dates back to the time of the Inca Empire. In the 1950s, indiscriminate hunting brought vicuñas to the brink of extinction. Thanks to the Chaccu, today thousands of vicuñas run free in the Andean Cordillera.
