‘Rock the Mountain’: the mountain in the iconography of pop music through a vinyl collection in the Sala Ondare

Bilbao, November 26, 2021. The Sala Ondare Aretoa of the Provincial Council of Bizkaia is hosting the ROCK THE MOUNTAIN exhibition within the framework of the BBK Mendi Film Bilbao-Bizkaia mountain film festival. After being presented today, it will remain open until February 12, 2022.

New festival of 17 documentaries on nature and climate change from October 21 to 27 at the Sala BBK in Bilbao

BBK presents the 1st edition of KLIMA BBK, a documentary festival that will be held between October 21 and 27 at the Sala BBK in Bilbao.
A total of 17 documentaries have been programmed with the purpose of disseminating stories and actions in favor of the conservation of the environment and the fight against climate change.

Mendi Film will reunite the Navarrese and Polish mountaineers of Shakhaur'76 45 years later at the Opening Ceremony on December 4th

The story began in 1976 when a group of young mountaineers set off in two fully loaded travel in Jeeps from Pamplona's Town Hall square to the Hindu Kush mountain range in Afghanistan. It was an expedition full of adventure, discovery and exoticism that culminated in a successful ascent to the summit of the 7,116-metre peak of Shakhaur. It was "the first Basque seven-thousander", a milestone in the history of our Himalayan climbing.

Kurt Diemberger at the San Sebastian international mountain film contest (1983) and Dariusz Zaluski at the BBK Mendi Film Bilbao-Bizkaia festival (2019)

Kurt Diemberger now has someone to delegate to: Dariusz Zaluski. Both are nicknamed "filmmakers of the eight-thousanders", and only three years after Diemberger was awarded the Grand Prize of the IAMF-International Alliance for Mountain Film, Zaluski wins it this year.

Sebastián Álvaro will be the WOP Awarded 2021 at the 14th edition of BBK Mendi Film Bilbao-Bizkaia

The adventurer Sebastián Álvaro is going be distinguished with the WOP-The Walk On Project 2021 Award from the BBK Mendi Film Bilbao-Bizkaia. The conferment is going to take place during the 14th edition of the festival, which will be held between 3rd and 12th of December this year in Bilbao.

Film submission period for the BBK Mendi Film Bilbao - Bizkaia 2021 open from 1st of April until 15th of September

The commitment to celebrate the edition of the pandemic in December of last year reinforced all of us, directors, producers and fans of mountain cinema, with a festival to remember. This year we share again the energy, inspiration and enthusiasm that were the engines of the 2020 edition's success. 

Film submissions are open for the 14th edition, which will take place from 3th to 12th December 2021. Interested producers, directors, and filmmakers must submit their films by 15th September 2021.

Alastair Lee's three films join the Mendi Tour Online offer

Dariusz Zaluski "the new director of the 8000ers" IAMF Grand Prize 2021

Polish mountaineer and filmmaker Dariusz Zaluski will be awarded with the International Alliance for Mountain Film Grand Prize 2021. It was announced at the awards ceremony of the Trento Film Festival by Jabier Baraiazarra as president of the Alliance: "Zaluski is the director and mountaineer who has best known how to make the lesson of the great Kurt Diemberger his own, establishing as the new director of the 8000ers".

The IAMF Grand Prize, which celebrates its 20th anniversary, recognizes the trajectory of the award-winning filmmakers, as well as their contribution to both cinema and mountain culture. Zaluski becomes part of a select group of filmmakers who mark the history of mountain cinema in the 21st century.

In Dariusz Zaluski's filmography stands out the film Ostatnia Gora (The Last Mountain) -available on Mendi Tour Online -, about the winter polish expedition of 2018 to the K2. A film that manages to transfer the viewer to the harsh and tense conditions of an outstanding expedition, without censorship and with a sublime narrative. Darius Zaluski received the Best Director Award and the Best Mountaineering Film Award at the BBK Mendi Film Bilbao-Bizkaia 2019 for this film, which has been awarded at many other prestigious international festivals.

The IAMF is the leading reference in the mountain film industry, and its goal is to promote, enhance and conserve this fascinating cinematography genre. The association is made up of 28 members, 27 mountain festivals and the Museo Nazionale della Montagna in Turin, and in total 20 nations from 5 Continents are represented.

"The Edge of Guillotine" is the 2021 image of BBK Mendi Film Bilbao-Bizkaia

The photography "The Edge of Guillotine", by Czech photographer Jan Zahula, has won the BBK Mendi Film Bilbao-Bizkaia Poster Award at the CVCEPHOTO contest, for which it will be the main image of this year's festival.

The setting in the image places us in the Elbe Valley, in the Bohemian Switzerland region of the Czech Republic. A paradise of rocks and sandstone mountains, on one of whose sharp edges the American climber Jenny Fischer appears climbing the "Guilotina VIIb" route.

The Basque Mountaineering Federation and Mendi Film have renewed their collaboration agreement

The Basque Mountaineering Federation EMF-FVM currently has a record number of almost 40,000 associate members. Both the Asociación Mendi Film Elkartea and the Federation are interested in the promotion of mountaineering among their members and the general public.

Zigor Egia, President of the EMF-FVM, and Eduardo Martínez, President of Mendi Film, signed the collaboration agreement for 2021. They were joined by Ricardo Hernani, member of the new board at EMF-FVM, and Jabier Baraiazarra, director of Mendi Film.
